Merit: Allies and Merit: Contacts

Unless changed in a future rules update, assume the merits Allies and Contacts will work just as described in the core World of Darkness book. Here's a brief summary.

Allies: You may take Allies multiple times (up to a limit of 5 Allies per PC). Each acquisition of the Allies Merit is dedicated to one type of ally. The number of dots represents how deep the character's influence runs in that group. It's up to each player to decide whether this represents a single ally who is very useful or if each dot represents a different, lesser ally within that field (and the players will be encouraged to write brief descriptions of these allies into your Background or Journal forums). Each dot can garner the character a small favor each month, or you can use more dots to complete a larger favor. Each time you take Allies, it applies to a different area of influence or group.

Contacts: Contacts is a graduated merit, 1-5, and cannot be taken multiple times. Each dot of Contacts represents a different area of influence. If you have Contacts 3, that might mean that your character knows someone in Finance, the Police station, and at the University, any of whom she can call on for inside information (requiring a Persuasion or Socialize check, made by the ST if it's as part of a Contacts downtime action). Each dot can garner the character an answer to a relevant question about that field of influence each month.

These merits represent one of the most dynamic ways your character can interact with the rest of the setting. We have purposefully been vague on the mechanics of how this works in the game so far, mostly because we would rather reward how creative each player can be with these merits than to limit you based on a system in a book.

Allies and Contacts can fit into a number of categories, below are the recommended categories. If you have an ally that wont fit into one of the categories below, feel free to make one up that fits, but if you're able to shoehorn them into one of the following categories, you'll be able to do more with them in the long run.

  • Bureaucracy
  • Church
  • Finance
  • Health
  • High Society
  • Industry
  • Legal
  • Media
  • Occult
  • Police
  • Political
  • Street
  • Transportation
  • Underworld
  • University

Please let us know if further clarification is needed.

I had mentioned to several players that there are basically 15 categories of mortal influences that should cover the majority of areas of influences for Allies or Contacts within the mortal society outside of the Kindred court.

Several people had asked for a list of those categories, as examples of the kid of Allies or Contacts you can take. Here goes. Feel free to use one of the following for your Allies or Contacts (or even status!) within the rules above.

  • Bureaucracy
  • Church
  • Finance
  • Health
  • High Society
  • Industry
  • Legal
  • Media
  • Occult
  • Police
  • Political
  • Street
  • Transportation
  • Underworld
  • University
