The Laws of Dark Ridge

Post by Justin Cline on Tue May 06, 2014 2:25 pm

+From the desk of His Grace, the Honorable Cardinal Alexandre Hayes, Prince of Dark Ridge+

Herein are the body of laws that shall govern the Kindred of the city of Dark Ridge. It is required of all Kindred to hold these laws inviolable and to immediately report any transgressions thereof to the city’s Sheriff. These laws will be posted publicly, and as such, feigned ignorance is not a valid defense. Any attempts to aid in the violation of these laws or a Kindred that has violated these laws, whether through direct collaboration or by virtue of guilt by omission, will result in all conspirators being held equally complicit and therefore subject to equal punishment.

As ever, the Traditions are inviolate. Any Kindred found to be breaking any of the Traditions shall suffer harsh punishment, up to and including their Final Death. The Traditions are:

I. The Masquerade: Do not reveal your true nature to those not of the Blood. Doing so forfeits your claim to the Blood.

II. Progeny: Sire another at the peril of both yourself and your progeny. If you create a childe, the weight is your own to bear

III. Amaranth: You are forbidden from devouring the heartsblood of another of your kind. If you violate this commandment, the Beast calls to your own Blood.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to these ancient laws of the Kindred His Grace Prince Alexandre Hayes, by his right as sovereign ruler and executor, recognizes the following laws within the domain of Dark Ridge:

Acknowledgement: New Kindred arriving in the city have five nights time to present themselves to the Prince to explain their presence and intentions in Dark Ridge. They will read the laws of the city and will receive a copy of their own upon formal Acknowledgement. Any Unacknowledged Kindred not willing to abide by the laws of the city will not be granted Acknowledgement and will be required to leave the domain immediately.
Deference: Proper respect will be shown to Kindred of great age and high station.
Domain: The territories of other Kindred are to be respected at all times. Each Kindred is the Lord of his house, and the Prince is the Lord of all houses. The city itself is the Prince’s domain and those that dwell within it do so at his consent. His word is law.
Elysium: There shall be no violence on the grounds of any of the city’s Elysium. They are neutral grounds where any Kindred may walk without fear of assault or reprisal. This does not only include physical violence.
Poaching: No Kindred shall hunt within the territory of another without their permission.

Tutelage: An extension of the Second Tradition, those who sire a new childe are responsible for the proper instruction of their progeny in the laws and customs of Kindred society. Kindred that wish to release their childer from their care must petition the Prince for permission to do so formally.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Punishments for transgressions against these laws will be determined at the Prince’s discretion. Mitigating factors such as intent and severity will be taken into account. Breaches of these laws will be separated into either Minor, Major, and Capital Offenses.

Minor Offenses include acts such as poaching another Kindred’s territory, failing to present one’s self to the Prince within three nights of arrival in the city, disruption or destruction of the assets of a court officer, or failure to report to court when requested to do so. Punishment for such infractions will be appropriate for the crime. This may simply be providing appropriate reparations, but may also include loss of domain or title, public chastisement, or in more extreme cases, partial Vinculum.

Major Offenses include acts such as deliberately avoiding presentation or otherwise trying to hide from the Prince for an extended period of time, violating the laws of Elysium, providing aid to a blood-hunted Kindred, conspiring against the Prince, inflicting the Vinculum on an unwilling Kindred without legal cause, destruction of another Kindred’s haven, or killing another Kindred’s ghoul. Punishments for such infractions may include loss of substantial status or assets, a period of forced torpor, or in more extreme cases, banishment or a full Vinculum.

Capital Offenses are the most extreme crimes in Kindred society such as blatant disregard for the Masquerade, destruction of another Kindred with the Right of Destruction, or in last-ditch self defense, siring a childe without leave from the Prince, abandoning a childe that has not been formally released, or committing diablerie under any circumstances. The Traditions are inviolate and there is but one penalty for any of these most terrible violations: Final Death.

As is his right, the Prince reserves the authority to make additions or changes to these laws. All Kindred citizens of Dark Ridge can expect reasonable announcement of any future changes.
