House Rule: Merit: Resources

MERIT: RESOURCES ● TO ●●●●●

Effective immediately (but not retroactively), We are converting to a new Resources system. The new system will address some of the issues with the linear nature of the benefit of the Resources Merit regardless of the graduated cost per dot. This new revision will also add a dynamic money system to live gameplay and provide you with a more realistic measure of your options with the Resources Merit.

Yes, this new system is a little more complicated than the simple Resources Merit from the World of Darkness core book. But we also feel it is both more well defined and robust. If you have any questions about these changes, please contact the ST staff for clarification.

The information below consists of our house rule modifications.

The Resources Merit still represents the wealth and material possessions of your character.  However, instead of the dots on your sheet indicating a cash value, you will now receive Resource Traits per month according to the following chart.
These Resource Traits refresh at the start of each monthly game.

Number of Resource Traits Received Per Month:
1-dot of Resources Merit = 1 Resource Trait per month
2 dots of Resources Merit = 3 Resource Traits per month
3 dots of Resources Merit = 6 Resource Traits per month
4 dots of Resources Merit = 10 Resource Traits per month
5 dots of Resources Merit = 15 Resource Traits per month

Additionally, the costs for all items have changed to reflect the House Rules system of Resource Traits.
Use the Resource dot cost from the book and use the following chart to determine the number of Resource Traits that must be expended to purchase that item.

Item Costs:
1-dot item cost = 1 Resource Trait
2-dot item cost = 4 Resource Traits
3-dot item cost = 9 Resource Traits
4-dot item cost = 16 Resource Traits
5-dot item cost = 25 Resource Traits

In addition to the modifications above, a player may now "bank" their character's resource traits for one month, to be used in addition to their monthly traits during the following month.
This is called your “Resource Bank.”  If your bank balance exceeds the number of traits your character receives in one month, the excess traits are assumed to be spent on trivialities – entertainment, maintenance, services, etc.
For example, if you have 3 Resources dots, your character may bank up to 6 Resource Traits. When the next month comes along, he gets another 6 Resource Traits for a total of 12 that can be spent.  However, if he spends only 4 Traits that month, his bank balance is still only 6 Traits – the other 2 Traits are assumed to have been spent on incidental expenses.

Your number of Resource Traits at a given time represents the amount of money and capital that your character can secure. This capital may be from investments, holdings, companies owned, patents, or from the performance of a job or profession. If you don't clearly note in your background how this Merit is garnered, the income will be assumed to be gained from investments, such as stocks and bonds.

Truly powerful uses of Resources are best left to downtimes, moderated between game sessions.

Resources can also be used to purchase the Haven Merit (Size, Location, Security or Cache)* without the expenditure of experience points. For every Resource Trait spent on the Haven Merits, it will reduce the cost by one experience point. Resource traits can also be banked for exceptionally high levels of Haven until it’s completely purchased (This is the only exception to the banking limit as listed above). The new additions to Haven will not be gained until this cost is completely paid for.
*Note that this applies to the Temple Merit from the Circle of the Crone book, but not any of the Necropolis Merits, Library, or Haven:Traps. Those must still be purchased with experience points.

Similarly, the XP cost to purchase dots in the Assets merit may be reduced by one experience point for each Resource trait spent for that purpose. This is intended to allow an investment of character time and wealth towards building (or buying) something meaningful, respectable, or lasting.

The Resource merit also determines a Character’s starting equipment. Each PC receives 3 times their monthly Resource Traits plus 5 in equipment.  (If you have no Resources Merit, you start with 5 Resource Traits of starting equipment.)  Any of the Resource Traits for starting equipment not used before your character enters play are lost – you cannot bank them. In addition to this starting equipment, the Resources Merit also grants a certain level of lifestyle and a home. This granted home does not benefit from the advantages of the Haven Merit (unless upgraded later). It is little more than mere shelter from the sun.

*** Clarification on the impact of this system on the Merit: Haven ***

  • The Carthian Movement's experience cost reduction on Haven DOES still apply. Resource traits can be used to further reduce that cost, per the rules above.
  • Using Resource traits to purchase dots in Communal Havens is no different than when using experience points. See the Vampire: the Requiem book, page 101.
  • Because Haven can now be purchased with Resource traits, the Sanctity of Merits house rule no longer applies to lost dots in the Haven merits.

We really appreciate that everyone is using the downtime form. However, the version that was available a few weeks ago obviously did not give good guidelines for this Resources Traits system.

The downtime form has been updated to try to make the Resources traits system more user-friendly on your downtimes from here on. Please use the new downtime form for your next downtime, and message me or Admin immediately if you have any questions about it.
