Black and Red

Post by Admin on Thu Apr 17, 2014 2:07 am

"You live in a place long enough and it is like ripping out a chunk of your soul to leave. You live in a place long enough and you sort of become a part of it."

The big black suitcase slammed into the concrete of the sidewalk as the young woman dropped it out of the trunk of the old black sedan. The sound it made was alien to her. A new town. A new place to get a new start. She sighed as she heaved another bag out onto the sidewalk. Her long wavy black hair curled and styled perfectly in a fashion that was outdated a century ago. She wore a black lace ruffled dress that was just long enough to hint at modesty, and short enough to be a tease. She mindlessly ran her hands across a ruby cross pendant that hung from her neck while she looked up and down the buildings and people on the street. People were staring at her. She couldn't figure out why, but it was annoying. Everything about this place was annoying to her. The smells, the sounds, the people, even the shape of the buildings grated on her every nerve. This city might as well be a new planet she thought as she dropped another bag onto the sidewalk.

A second young woman, barely over 18 bounded out of the building with a childlike exuberance. Her auburn red hair pulled back into a messy bun, she wore a form fitting "Avengers" T-shirt and a pair of ripped up blue jeans. She grinned as she danced out the door and over to the car at the curb. "Isn't this just amazing, Lillian?! I have never been in a city this big before! I am so thrilled that we're finally getting to explore the world! Look at these amazing clothes I found. They were just sitting there in a big metal box. I got a whole set of them!" She reached down and snatched up one of the bags the woman had placed on the sidewalk with a smirk. She swung it around in a circle as she spun with it in a dance that almost made the other woman forget her ill mood.

"Josephina, people are already staring at us. Do you want to make it worse? I don't like this. Not one bit. Lets just get this crap unloaded and go downstairs. Papa will be expecting word that we have made it to the city soon and I do not want to keep him waiting. You know how angry he can get!"

Josephina stopped twirling and smiled fondly at Lillian. "As you command, My Lady, so shall I obey." She curtsied, which looked awkward and clumsy in her new street clothes and began rushing the suitcases into the building.

Lillian stood at the car for a while taking in her surroundings. She could not remember a time when she had been outside of Huntsville, and now she was forced to live in a small basement apartment with her only remaining ghoul, Josephina. She shook her head and looked down the street at a couple of teenagers on skateboards and suddenly felt a hunger she hadn't felt in a long time. She called after Josephina and told her to mind the car while she went for a stroll.

Josephina looked down the street in the direction Lillian had gone and saw the teenage boys. Her heart sunk into the pit of her stomach and she knew what the woman was about to do. She'd been with her long enough to know the signs. It was like an addiction for Lillian. She just couldn't stop herself. How many had Josephina grown close to now? 20? 30? only to have them cast aside like refuse. She couldn't let it happen again, not yet, not on their first night in the city. She picked up her cell phone and called Lillian's sire's retainer, James.

"James, it's Josephina... Lillian is at it again. Yes, we made it to Dark Ridge safely. No, no I don't think she's okay. Yeah, here is the address. Tell Cardinal Hayes to get here quickly. Thanks..."

Lillian made her way down the street, and stopped dead in her tracks before she reached the teenagers. She turned and looked back to Josephina. She sensed another beast nearby and started searching frantically for its host. It wasn't someone she knew, it was a new beast. She steeled herself for the inevitable and waited for it to round the corner.

((OOC note: This is a scene that all kindred of Dark Ridge are welcome to participate in. If you would like to participate, have your character walk by and we can start a dialogue!))

Re: Black and Red

Post by Toasty on Thu Apr 17, 2014 2:29 am

A pregnant pause, the pulse of the city seeming to stumble for just a split second as two monsters sniffed each other out, and from around the corner came a neat, brown shoe, followed closely by its owner, stepping neatly.

It would have seemed like nothing to any bystander--a chance meeting of the eyes between this oddly dressed woman and this balding little man--but alert, predatory instincts flooded eyes behind thick lenses, deciding whether to flee...or attack.

The moment passed and the pulse of the city seemed to resume, and the man peered knowingly at the woman, his glasses sliding down the bridge of his nose. He wasn't much to look at, dressed in a blue oxford shirt with khaki pants and loafers, hair thinned to nothing on top and squinty eyes, and the exact, almost prissy way he pushed his glasses up with the heel of one hand while he clutched a book in the other, but he approached her with an air of quiet caution, his internal compass oscillating wildly between curious alertness and raving suspicion.

He had not expected yet another newcomer to the city, not so soon perhaps, but it made sense with the mess that Huntsville had turned into. He sniffed mentally, derisively--all sorts of rats leaving a sinking ship, though this one looked less scruffy than most. Her dress was nice, and her styled hair presentable, at any rate.

His nightly hunt in the collegiate district had turned up little, the chill of the night keeping most of his typical prey cossetted behind locked doors. Langstrom had been making his way back to his haven, a path that took him near Elysium, hungry and disappointed and imagining that the whole night would be a waste, but now...

...well, it couldn't hurt to get chummy with another of the Cardinal's cronies, Langstrom thought to himself, Or at least get a little credit for spotting an interloper and bringing her to his attention.

He stopped a few feet away from her, eyes glittering with a mad sort of light as his hands locked protectively over his chest and clenched at the ledger as if it were a lifeline and a shield, and his gaze flickered uncertainly between this woman in the lacy dress and the girl standing near the suitcases, back over his shoulder, everywhere. Trying to keep tabs on everything but needing at least two more eyes to manage it efficiently.

"Good evening," he intoned in a pleasant, guarded voice, putting a smile on his face that looked out of place and ludicrously disingenuous, and every aspect of his body language seemed to say that this man was terrified out of his wits, "It's a nice night, isn't it?"

It didn't appear that he thought it was a nice night. An apocalyptic night, perhaps--his right eye seemed to twitch continuously, the tic continuous and exhausting to watch, his gaze turning upwards every few seconds, as if expecting the sun to appear suddenly there, or perhaps for a meteorite to come rocketing down directly on top of him. The smile turned into a crooked grin, turned up at one end of his mouth and down at the other, wavering between a friendly smile and a grimace.

"A very nice night for fresh blood."

Alexandre was exploring the streets of his new Gilded Cage again tonight. Dark Ridge is quite the sizeable city, it will take many more nights of walking in order to properly memorize it's layout. "One of the perks of being Damned, I have all the time in the world," he thought to himself.

Alexandre felt his front pocket vibrate. That annoying piece of technology was making a ruckus again. He reached in and saw on the screen that James was calling him. He answered the phone "This is Cardinal Hayes... oh, fantastic, Lilly made it in.... wait.... again? Ok, I'll be right there."

Alexandre broke out into a sprint. The stress of the move must be getting to Lilly, and lives were going to be ruined until she calmed down. "I wish Father Strange would hurry up and get here, her uncle John always seems to have a calming effect on her" he thought.

I just hope I'm not too late...

Lillian stared at the man in front of her with a look somewhere between fear and anger. Inside of her the beast screamed, but she was able to cage it, at least until intentions were made clear. She watched him with curiosity. His of style of dress and the way he grasped at his book reminded her of someone, but she couldn't recall who.

Readjusting her position and smoothing her dress she looked past this new kindred to the teenagers at the end of the street. They were gathering up their backpacks and moving on. Damnit. She visibly snarled the word at the set back, her perfectly manicured ruby lips crunching up over delicate white fangs. Her big brown eyes moved back to the strange man before her and she rest her gaze upon him for a moment before speaking. He was terrified. She could sense it and she delighted in it. She smirked and adjusted her stance, shoulders back, chin up, back straight. Prim and proper just like papa had taught her.

"Well then. What have we?" She walked around him in a circle, examining him from every angle. She sniffed at him a bit and smiled.

"I assume you are not a refugee. You smell like this city, so it is my assumption that you have lived within its clutches for some time. I am assuming not a rogue, so likely a member of the city's court. Not imposing enough to be Oberon Corsetti, and you do not have the taint of the crone's sin upon you, and you are not intimidating enough to be the hound. I take it that you are not accustomed to meeting kindred on the streets like this?" She grinned, her dainty fangs glistening in the street light, proud of herself.

"I wish you no ill, strange man. I have come to your city seeking refuge. Brother Gordon arranged my arrival. I suppose proper protocol in this situation would be to ask to be taken to the Prince so that I may seek acknowledgment from his grace."

She curtsied and then extended a small gloved hand, palm down. "Lillian Blackmoore, Confessor of the Lancea Sanctum, Succubus of Hunts....well, I suppose not of Huntsville any longer." A wistful glance almost made her lose get composure.

"And you are?"

Re: Black and Red

Smooth. Always smooth. The Beast gibbered in lunatic fear inside of him, and a trio of voices screamed inside his head, She's going to get you, she's going to eat you, just like you ate us, and you deserve it, you deserve everything she's going to do to you, and--

There was a terrible moment when she seemed to snarl and curse where he almost fled, but the Man was in control. Smooth, like glass. Like a mirror, reflecting what the viewer wanted to see. The trembling, mousy man pleased her, and so that's what the Man continued to be.

He returned her predatory smile with a trembling simper, and extended his hand in return. Pale, cold, clammy. A dead thing. She was one of Them, best to keep up formalities. The way she watched the young men retreating down the street--she had been hungry. Hungry. Best also that he had come along when he did, it was a terrible breach of etiquette to poach before introduction. Saved her from herself, it appeared, and perhaps she knew that even if she resented it.

"Not a refugee, not a rogue, not the hound, and most certainly not the late Corsetti," he said, clasping the fingers of her outstretched hand and bowing formally at the waist. The grace of the motion belied much practice in such a gesture, and then he kissed the air above the back of her hand respectfully--old world charm dies hard when its beaten into you.

"I have seen precious few of our kind newly come to Dark Ridge of late, forgive my nervousness, please, Madame-Confessor Blackmoore. I am Lord Charles R. Langstrom III, humble notary of the First Estate."

Langstrom began rolling down the list of formal introduction, his sire, his sire's sire, his sire's sire's sire, then paused indelicately for a moment, as if processing her words and his own, his head cocked as if listening to some inner voice...

...going to get you, going to get you, going to get you, going to get you...

His lips pulled back drily from his own fangs--neat, prissy, like the rest of him, not intimidating, more like a rabbit squealing at something in the dark, but even a rabbit can nip when it's cornered.

"It is not well to hear that the storm in the South has driven another refugee before it, though good to hear that the fingers of the Brother remain in every pie, but some of your comrades, including the good Cardinal Hayes, have already arrived--to the detriment of Corsetti and his witch. A fellow Sanctified now occupies our throne, and I presume you and the Cardinal have already met? Considering your opinion and mine seem of one on the nature of the Circle, I feel it would not be impertinent to say that it is well-done, this thing."

Respectfully, he extended his elbow to her, bowing at the waist again, and inside the voice went from screaming doom to screaming acrimony, that he would be so cordial to one of Them, that he would violate the sanctity of a marriage he had never properly ended by even touching another woman, living or not, but, his brow wrinkling slightly with concentration, he ignored it.

"Madame-Confessor, that would indeed be the proper protocol, though merely a formality since I have no doubt you are already on good terms with our new Prince. Please, allow me to observe the formality and escort you."

A petite tremor went through his frame as he gave her another smile somewhere between a grimace of pain and a gloating, predatory grin, and his right eye began twitching with renewed vigor.

You hear the sound of obnoxious techno remixed pop songs from the late 90's coming down the street.  They gradually get louder and something inside of you detects that someone is approaching.  You didn't even have to pop auspex to figure that out.  A guy appears walking down the street with what looks like a custom made boombox strapped to a backpacking frame.  He sees you and turns the music down, but not off.  In the music you can hear the roaring of mechanical engines, not exactly matching the beat of the song, but all this techno crap sounds like transformers screwing so its hard to tell.

"What is UP, yall?! I did NOT think we would all run into each other this quickly, what are the odds?  Charles man you have GOT the check out these mad beats.  I'm totes ready for the ball yo.  Hey are you one of my new homeless homies?  If so you have already found the best to know, Charles here is THE man.  SURVIVOR- WHAT WHAT.  No seriously he's a badass.  Obi-Won-Kill-Lotty picked errybody off but this guy was one of the few that he didn't fuck with.  I am only awesome by association.  Shit I'm talking a lot.  HEY ARE YOU GOING TO THE BALL?   I'm going to the ball.  Bringing some MAD beats up in that bitch. Ok I have to go, I just wanted to come say hi.  Charles if you need anything you got my digits.  Welcome to the city!  Don't forget to check in with the P!"

Rick cranks his music back up and begins to walk off.

Alexandre, still in a dead run turned down another alleyway, then another, then another. It is quite fortunate he had already walked these streets a couple nights before and committed them to memory. As he neared the address he heard the dissonant sound of machinery and music, clashing in a terrible rumble of cacophony and discord.

He turned the corner and saw Mr. Rick Reynolds trotting off with some sort of noisy contraption attached to his back. A few dozen feet from him he saw Lord Charles R. Langstrom III, the notary of the First Estate, and with her back turned was a girl with unmistakable curls and outfit. He found Lilly.

If his heart were functioning, it would have skipped a beat. Lilly's posture did not bode well for the situation...

Lillian rolls her eyes when Charles begins his lengthy introduction.
Great, another one of them. As if D'Eon wasn't bad enough. she mused to herself. She stifled a yawn as the introduction continued...thing of this, thing of that, yada yada.
She wasn't happy in this new city, and she hated the way the aristocracy always had to introduce themselves by spouting their entire family tree to complete strangers. What she knew was that this kindred had just interrupted her game and now she looked him up and down as though he himself were dinner. She berated herself for being rude, and recomposed herself and let him continue speaking.

When he began speaking of the court she cocked her head to the side. "The Cardinal? Did you say the Late Corsetti?" she laughed, a full throated laugh that caused her to throw her head back and close her eyes to the intensity of it.
She returned her gaze to the man with a smile on her lips.
"Well, thank you for brightening up my night, This news makes my arrival here much more tolerable, even if I do so hate the lack of trees. Back home I have a fa..." her speech was cut short by a strange man with a weird box on his back and the loud screeching of machinery.

She suddenly ceased speaking and winced plunging her fingers into her ears until the noise was quieted and then studied the man and his box. She found that she could only understand about every third word, and that his mannerism seemed to indicate some form of excitement. She thought this man-thing was fascinating and when he turned to leave she cried out for him to remain so she could continue learning the strange language he spoke.
When she turned, about to speak, her eyes rested on Cardinal Hayes, who had just emerged from an alleyway.

All Decorum an manner left her completely and she took off in a dead run to him screaming "PAPA!" and throwing her arms around his neck.

Alexandre took Lillian's momentum and used it to spin her around in a circle, giving her a hug while doing so. He quickly looked over her shoulder for any signs of destruction, then he glanced at Josephina who gave him a nod indicating that he did indeed arrive in time.

"Lilly my dear, I'm so glad you made it safely to Dark Ridge. I'm a bit cross with you. You should have called your papa to let him know you had arrived safely. I was worried."

Alexandre then peered over her shoulder to try to gauge Lord Charles R. Langstrom III's reaction to the situation. It looked like a sense of confusion had replaced a feeling of fear... though he could be wrong, it was hard to tell from this far away. He looked back at Lilly, giving her his full attention.

"I see that Josephina delivered my sweet Lilly safely to the city. How was your trip?"

He smiled wanly in response to her pleasure, as if to say, Yes, all things are as they should be, God is in His Heaven, world without end, amen.

The look was immediately replaced by a brief, illuminating flash of venemous, incandescent hatred as the sound of the music reached his ears. The look on Langstrom's face as he turned to watch Rick approach was one of pure loathing, though it suffused into a quiet, bewildered smile as easily as mist evaporating before the sun.

"Good evening, Mister Rick. And that's patently untrue, I was simply beneath notice," he spoke in gaps, as if used to attempting to communicate with the man over his cloud of noisome noise.

He sneered internally as Rick took his one-man racket away. Langstrom's hadn't yet figured out where the two rats had been during Cosetti's fall, but he was determined to discover it...

He seemed to catch back up with what was happening, pulling his mind away from the conspiracies that mired him, and bowed formally to the Cardinal, covering his residual dislike of the noisy haunt with a moue of pleasant uncertainty, stepping back politely to allow them to reunite without interference.

Another Sanctified, another dynasty. Things never change...

Lillian straightened her dress and smiled, hooked her arm into Alexandre's and turned to Charles. The strange man with the loud box had already rounded the corner, so she was too late to catch up with him.

"Well, this is a wonderful surprise! And I hear you are the new prince already? How fitting. Wont you both join me in my new apartment? It's dreadfully unprepared for guests as I've just arrived, but I am certain I can find the bag with the lacrima in it."
She smiled, released her sire's arm and motioned for the two men to follow her as she skipped up to Josephina. The two girls grabbed a bag and headed into the apartment to start unpacking.

"Yes, Lilly, I am indeed the new Prince of Dark Ridge.  You missed quite the commotion a few nights ago.  I would love to come see your new apartment and fill you in over a glass of lacrima."

Alexandre looked to Lord Charles R. Langstrom III.  "It would be rude to turn down the lady's offer now wouldn't it?"  Alexandre turned and followed, not waiting to see if Lord Charles R. Langstrom III was coming.  He had very little doubt that he would.  Lord Charles R. Langstrom III was a Lord of the First Estate, he certainly wouldn't be rude and refuse.

He dropped back several steps and pulled his phone from his pocket, and hit speed dial.

"Yes.  She's fine.  Another happened to be here and distracted her.... yes... no, that is not necessary.... I'm on my way to her apartment now.... Oh, we'll just need to find her a hobby again like in Huntsville so she doesn't get bored... ok, excellent, keep me updated."  Alexandre fiddled with the phone some more and got the phone to hang up.  He hated this piece of glass that made calls, why don't phones have buttons anymore?

Alexandre then quickened his pace to pull up behind the girls and went inside with them.

Langstrom looked between the pair of them, his compass spinning wildly once more. It was frustrating having more than one face to face, especially when both were strangers.

Which mask? Which? Fearful or deferent? Both? Will I explode if I try? Can you even wear two masks at once? Your face would have to be really wide, or you'd have to have two. Like one of Them.

His thoughts raced together, runnels of gibberish that paralyzed his mind, and so he defaulted to that oh-so-common weapon of the Unconquered: stiff formality that verges on iciness.

"I would be most honored, Your Excellency, Madame-Confessor," he said in a non-committal but respectful tone, bowing his hunched shoulders once more and showing another gleam of his neat little fangs.

You could wear one on top of the other, he realized in a moment of surprising lucidity, and was so pleased with the thought that his smile was genuine as he followed the Cardinal and his childe and their retinue.

OOC: I just wanted to give an applause for the detail that people are putting into this. This is my first time doing online/IRC enhanced LARP games and I'm getting to see depth to characters that's hard to get in person. I keep thinking of Lord Langstrum dealing with his derangement, voices calling out in his head "She's going to get you... she's going to eat you..." and the paranoia that consumes him. It makes it harder for me as a player to keep track of what I know vs. what my character knows, but it has really enriched the experience for me and gives me the feeling of being right in the middle of a novel. I've never gotten this from a LARP before and it's amazing.

OOC: *** ST NOTE ***
We are very, VERY happy that this is going so well, and that so many of you are enjoying the opportunity to show a greater depth to your characters and their motivations.

Jeff hit on a really important point, though. There is a huge downside to using your characters' internal voice in public. It forces the other players to have to keep track of two levels of game information: 1) what the player knows about your character, and 2) what his/her character knows about your character.

For the sake of preventing any arguments later about players accidentally using OOC information IC'ly, or "metagaming", we encourage you to assume that any internal monologue you write on a public forum is to be considered obvious (or at least easily discernable).
Example: Simone is playing Tracy in an online scene after the game. If Simone writes that Tracy is  droning on and on in her head about red balloons being a tool of the devil to trap her soul, then Simone is waiving her right to act offended OOC when Tim's character, Malphius, mysteriously knows that about Tracy and begins torturing Tracy with red balloons. Simone put that information out there in public. The rest of us will assume it must have been easy to figure out about her.

PLEASE keep this in mind when publicly talking about what your character is thinking. If your character wouldn't want everyone to know she is a monster and plans to eat the rest of court, then don't tell the other players about it. People make mistakes. The ST staff will not be responsible for policing anything another player may do with the information you give them OOC about your character. It's up to each player to be mature enough to know not to tell people stuff your character wouldn't tell their character.

(If this would affect things your wrote in previous posts on this thread, and it's been too long to edit, please send a private message to Admin that includes the link to that post and the complete (edited) new contents, and the previous contents will be replaced.)
